Parsing Examples

Here are a few parsing examples of -αω and -οω verbs.

1. ἣν οὐδεὶς τῶν ἀρχόντων τοῦ αἰῶνος τούτου ἔγνωκεν· εἰ γὰρ ἔγνωσαν, οὐκ ἂν τὸν κύριον τῆς δόξης ἐσταύρωσαν (1 Cor 2:8).

...which none of the rulers of this age understood; for if they understood, they would not have crucified the Son of Glory.

ἐσταύρωσαν = VRB–1AoAInd3P σταυρόω "they crucified" [σταυρο + σ + α + ν: omicron stem/contract vowel lengthens to omega before the sigma 1Ao tense formative, then alpha connecting vowel and nu ending added]

 

2. νικῶν κληρονομήσει ταῦτα καὶ ἔσομαι αὐτῷ θεὸς καὶ αὐτὸς ἔσται μοι υἱός. (Rev 21:7)

The one who overcomes will inherit these things and I will be that person's God and that person will be my child.

νικῶν = VRB–PrAPar–MNS νικάω "the one overcoming/conquering" [νικα + ο + ντ + _: stem/contract vowel contracts with omicron connecting vowel, then ντ active participle morpheme is added and tau drops off because no case ending is used in the MNS]

 

3. ὁ λαὸς οὗτος τοῖς χείλεσίν με τιμᾷ, ἡ δὲ καρδία αὐτῶν πόρρω ἀπέχει ἀπ᾽ ἐμοῦ· (Mat 15:8)

This [group of] people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

τιμᾷ = VRB–PrAInd3S τιμάω "he/she/it honors" [τιμα + ει: stem/contract vowel contracts with the present active indicative third singular ending (ει) and forms ]
